About the Artist

Alecia Loxton is a South African oil painter whose practice is rooted in the human figure, emotion and the exploration of what lies beneath the surface of our physical selves. For Alecia, painting has felt like something she needed to do, as though without it a part of her would be missing.

As a child, she painted watercolours directly onto the walls of her home, with her mother’s blessing, knowing that they would eventually wash away. She drew with chalk on pavements and found an early freedom in being able to create simply for the sake of creating.

She is particularly drawn to the human figure and the unlimited colour pallet found in human skin. Through the act of painting the body, she explores not only its physical presence but also the emotions and experiences it can carry.

Over time, her work has expanded beyond the observed figure into symbolic imagery. These elements provide a way of moving beyond the physical and exploring the more internal aspects of humanity.

Alecia holds a Master of Technology in Fine Arts, Cum Laude, from Tshwane University of Technology and has worked professionally as a painter since 2018. Her work has been exhibited extensively in South Africa, including solo and group exhibitions, and has been featured in publications including SA Art Times.

She continues to explore the relationship between the physical and the psychological, using the language of oil painting to ask questions about what it means to be human.
